Prof. Gianfranco Parati

Prof. Gianfranco Parati was born in Crema (CR) on 22nd February 1951.

After a preparatory course on scientific methodology and study, logic and philosophy of science, Prof. Gianfranco Parati gained a Degree in Medicine and Surgery at the University of Milan in 1977, with the following final mark: 110/110 cum laude.

Prof. Gianfranco Parati specialised in Cardiology in 1979 and Internal Medicine in 1984 at the University of Milan obtaining the following final mark: 70/70 cum laude.

In 1984, he was awarded a Prize in the "Nuovi talenti alla Ricerca" (New talents in Research) project promoted by “Corriere Medico” and by the “Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche” (National Research Council) with the following motivation: "Contributions to research in the field of nervous control of the cardiovascular system".

Prof. Gianfranco Parati was a Visiting Scientist in 1991 at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Boston, U.S.A and at the Children's Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Boston, Massachusetts, USA. He is the author of more than 500 publications in journals classified in the Index Medicus and in national and international books.

Prof. Gianfranco Parati was a Full Professor in Internal Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery of the University of Milan-Bicocca from 2006 up to 2011, and is the Medical Director of the Cardiology Division of S. Luca Hospital, Istituto Auxologico Italiano, Institute for Treatment and Research (IRCCS), Milan, where he has worked from 1991, and is the Coordinator of the Cardiology Research Laboratory of Istituto Auxologico Italiano. Prof. Gianfranco Parati is the Medical Director of the Cardiology Unit at the S. Luca Hospital, Istituto Auxologico Italiano, Milan from 2008.

Prof. Gianfranco Parati is the Medical Director of the Medical Science and Rehabilitation Department from October 2009, specialising in the Cardio-Neuro-Metabolic fields of the Institute for Treatment and Research (IRCCS) at the S. Luca Hospital, Istituto Auxologico Italiano, Piazzale Brescia, Milan.
From 2011, Prof. Gianfranco Parati is currently a Full Professor for the MED/11 scientific disciplinary sector, Cardiovascular Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery, University of Milan-Bicocca.

During his career Prof. Gianfranco Parati was the Founder and Chairman of the Working Group on Blood Pressure and Heart Rate Variability of the European Society of Hypertension, a member of the Scientific Committee of the Italian Society of Cardiology and Chairman of the Lombard Section of the Italian Society of Arterial Hypertension.

He is currently the Coordinator of the Study Group for Blood Pressure Monitoring of the Italian Society of Arterial Hypertension. From 2009 Prof. Gianfranco Parati is the Chairman of the Italian Society of Cardiology Study Group on heart failure. In 2010 he was elected a member of the Council of the Italian Society of Sleep Medicine. From 2010 Prof. Gianfranco Parati was elected ex-officio Councillor of the Working group on Hypertension and the Heart, European Society of Cardiology. In 2012 he was elected as a council member of the Working group on Hypertension and the Heart, European Society of Cardiology. In 2011 he was the Elected Chairman, as ESH Officer, of the European Society of Hypertension Working Groups, ex officio member of the ESH Council. In 2012 he was President of the Working Group on Blood Pressure Monitoring, European Society of Hypertension.

Prof. Gianfranco Parati is a member of numerous national and international scientific societies, for example, the European Society for Clinical Investigation, the Italian Society of Arterial Hypertension, the Italian Society of Cardiology, the New York Academy of Sciences, the International Society of Hypertension, the American Society of Hypertension, the European Society of Hypertension, the American Physiological Society and the American Heart Association. Prof. Gianfranco Parati is the Italian Representative of COST Action B26 on Obstructive Sleep Apnoea of the European Union.
From 1991 Prof. Gianfranco Parati is an International Fellow of the High Blood Pressure Council (ref. No. 92007876B) of the American Heart Association. From 2002 he is a Fellow of the European Society of Cardiology. In 2004 Prof. Gianfranco Parati was appointed “Lecturer of the Year” of the Belgian Universities and Belgian Hypertension League. In 2002 he was awarded the title of “European Hypertension Specialist”.

Prof. Gianfranco Parati is greatly involved in editorial activities: a member of the reviewer board of numerous international journals, he was Assistant Editor of "High Blood Pressure and Cardiovascular Prevention" and a member of the Editorial Board of the American Journal of Physiology and of the Netherland Journal of Medicine. He is an honorary member of a number of societies of cardiology and arterial hypertension of foreign countries.
Prof. Gianfranco Parati is currently a member of the Editorial Board of "Hypertension", a publication of the American Heart Association and of the “Blood Pressure Monitoring Journal” and Executive Editor of the "Journal of Hypertension", the official Journal of the European and the International Society of Hypertension, and the Associate Editor of Hypertension Research, the Official Journal of the Japanese Society of Hypertension. Prof. Gianfranco Parati was the coordinator and main author of the Italian Guidelines on the measurement of blood pressure, of the European Guidelines on Home Blood Pressure Monitoring and the guidelines for the management of patients with Obstructive Sleep Apnoea and Arterial Hypertension of the European Society of Hypertension and of the European Respiratory Society. Prof. Gianfranco Parati is an elected member of the Board of Governors of the Italian Association of Sleep Medicine from 2009.

He is the coordinator of various research projects on arterial hypertension, clinical cardiology, heart failure, autonomic nervous control of the cardiovascular system, telemedicine, 24-hour cardiovascular monitoring techniques, effects of high altitude hypobaric hypoxia with research projects in the Alps and in the Himalayan Region and cardiovascular effects of microgravity. Prof. Gianfranco Parati is also involved in the space research programmes of the Italian Space Agency and the NASA-European Space Agency. In 2005 the research group on heart failure which is headed by Prof. Gianfranco Parati received the Special CNR Award for the Project: “Managed Domiciliary Care by Telematic Technologies to provide Integrated Cardiology and Psychological Care of a Patient with Heart Failure, in the context of the Public Administration Forum, 6th Edition of the Award for Excellence in Health Services, with the Patronage of the Ministry of Health.
